Getting to and Around Dunedin

Planning a trip to Dunedin? Discover how to reach the city by plane, car or bus, and explore the easiest ways to get around Dunedin and the beautiful Otago Peninsula.

Dunedin is located on New Zealand’s South Island, approximately 360 kilometres south of Christchurch.

Although the city is relatively remote compared with New Zealand’s largest urban centres, it is accessible by air and road.

Once you arrive, exploring the historic city centre is straightforward, while a rental car can be useful for discovering the surrounding countryside.

Getting to Dunedin by Plane

Dunedin Airport is located approximately 30 kilometres southwest of the city centre.

Domestic flights connect Dunedin with major New Zealand destinations, including Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

From the airport, you can continue to the city by airport shuttle, taxi or rental car.

Check current flight schedules and airport transport options at Dunedin Airport .

Getting to Dunedin by Car

Driving is a popular way to explore New Zealand’s South Island.

From Christchurch, the journey to Dunedin typically takes around five hours, depending on traffic and stops along the way.

If you are travelling from Queenstown, allow approximately three and a half to four hours.

Remember that New Zealand drives on the left-hand side of the road.

Getting Around Dunedin

Dunedin’s central attractions are relatively close together, making walking a convenient option.

However, the city is known for its hills, so some routes can be more challenging than they initially appear.

Local buses connect the city centre with residential areas, beaches and surrounding suburbs.

You can find current routes and timetables through Otago Regional Council .

Exploring the Otago Peninsula

A rental car offers the greatest flexibility for visiting Larnach Castle, wildlife reserves and the peninsula’s more remote coastal areas.

Guided tours are another option, particularly if you want to observe wildlife responsibly without driving yourself.

My tip: If you are travelling around the South Island, include Dunedin as a stop between Christchurch and the southern regions. Allow enough time to explore the city and spend at least one full day on the Otago Peninsula.
